Yatsu said, however, the ministry will first conduct research for up to two years to assess what impact the opening of the gates would have on the sea before opening them.''''We automaticirongates cannot open the gates immediately because the panel has recommended that we conduct research while keeping the gates closed,'''' Yatsu said.But the opening of the gates ''''will become necessary during the two-year period during which we will conduct research on the Ariake Sea,'''' he said.When the gates can be opened ''''remains unknown because the timing depends on the findings of the research,'''' he said.The panel, headed by University of Tokyo professor emeritus Makoto Shimizu, has been looking into the cause of this season''s poor seaweed crop in the inland sea in Nagasaki Prefecture.
